Free residential electricity tool
Understand your electricity bill
Check an actual bill, estimate monthly costs, or compare electricity prices across U.S. states using official EIA data.
Electricity calculator
Your current bill
See how your bill compares
Use the amount and billing period from one residential electricity bill. Adding kWh gives a more useful result.
Standardized estimate
Estimate a monthly bill
Get a simple scenario based on home size and household size. It is a broad estimate, not a utility quote.
Same-usage comparison
Compare electricity costs by state
Both states use the same kWh and the same complete EIA month, so the price difference stays clear.

Methodology and limitations
Estimate → Benchmark → Explain
One tool, three practical questions
Is my bill high?
Compare a normalized 30-day bill and, when provided, usage with official state and U.S. residential averages.
What might I pay?
Build a transparent household scenario using the preserved Billora usage model and a dated statewide price.
What changes by state?
Hold usage constant and isolate the difference created by average residential electricity prices.
About the data and estimates
Billora uses residential electricity data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Monthly state comparisons use one common complete data period. Bill and usage benchmarks use the latest verified annual EIA edition available to the tool.
Statewide EIA figures are averages, not your utility’s tariff. Actual bills can include fixed charges, taxes, riders, tiers, credits, and time-of-use pricing. Household estimates are standardized scenarios and may differ from actual use because of climate, home efficiency, appliances, and heating or cooling systems.
Frequently asked questions
Electricity bill calculator FAQ
Can Billora tell me if my electricity bill is high?
Billora compares a 30-day-normalized bill with official state and U.S. residential averages. Adding kWh also enables usage and effective all-in cost comparisons. The result is a benchmark, not a utility audit.
Where can I find kWh on my electricity bill?
Look for a line labeled kWh used, total usage, electricity usage, or meter usage. Use the total for the same billing period as the bill amount.
Is effective all-in cost per kWh the same as my utility rate?
Not necessarily. Bill amount divided by kWh includes every dollar on the bill, so it may reflect fixed charges, taxes, riders, credits, tiers, and other items in addition to the energy rate.
How does the state comparison work?
Billora applies identical monthly kWh to both states using average residential electricity prices from one common complete EIA month. This isolates the statewide price difference in the scenario.
Is the electricity bill calculator free to use?
Yes. The calculator is free and requires no account. Bill amounts, kWh, and previous-bill values are not included in share links by default.
